Media release - August 2006

Murrumbateman Food and Wine will arrive on the October Weekend.

"The Canberra District has emphatically arrived on the scene" says James Halliday in his 2006 Wine Atlas of Australia. The winemakers in the Murrumbateman region of the Canberra District have combined with the foodies to show off their wares and the wonders of the small family enterprises who craft ultra premium wine, food, accommodation, and hospitality. The weekend starts at the National Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show public tasting with wines from across Australia.

Whet your appetite on the October Long Weekend at Murrumbateman's Moving Feast in the premium Canberra Wine Region. Murrumbateman is a fine wine region just 3 hrs from Sydney, and ½ hour from Canberra, with a history of wine dating back to the 1850s. Twelve wineries on the September 30 and October 1 weekend will provide guests with fine food matched with their nationally and internationally recognised wines. Enjoy a Gravlax of Salmon with a multi trophy winning Riesling, a selection of local cheese with an international renowned Shiraz viognier, fruit and lemon sorbet with a methode champenoise or slow cooked duck shanks with a sparkling Shiraz - these are just some of the delights to discover over the weekend

Murrumbateman is on the Barton Highway between Canberra and Yass and is part of the highly regarded Canberra District Wine Region. Yass was the centre of a fine wine region from 1850 till the 1900s which exported wine around the world. In the 1970s.the region was replanted and now produces some of the world's best Shiraz viognier and Rieslings, together with multi award Cabernet sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and sparking wines. Restaurants, Bed and Breakfasts, motel accommodation, and antiques galleries have followed the wineries and provide the tourist with the other essentials.

For $15 each winery will provide an entrée serve of a particular dish to match their benchmark wine in a souvenir engraved glass. Visitors can collect as many glasses as they wish, dependent on the number of wineries they visit.

Many wineries will also have available back vintages, new releases, tasting of rare wines with the winemaker, who is nearly always present at the cellar doors. The Murrumbateman wineries are well known for their friendly hospitality and the willingness of the owners to talk about their wines and vineyards. This weekend will be a very special occasion to enjoy the wines, wineries and rural hospitality.

Accommodation is available at local Bed and Breakfasts, hotel / motel and in Yass and Canberra - but be quick beds are filling fast.
